Remote HEMS Access

Remote access to the HEMS is one of our most frequently requested features.
Realising that you forgot to turn off the immersion on the first day of a holiday is a common problem we have all had!

It is understandable to want to access your Home Assistant instance from outside your home, but that is not a straightforward thing to do. Accessing a device on a home network from the wider internet has all sorts of technical, privacy and security considerations, and at Carbon Co-op we currently don’t have the capability to build this infrastructure ourselves.

Luckily, the HEMS is built on some excellent open source software that is backed with commercial support.
Nabu Casa was founded by the founders of Home Assistant (HA) and funds much of the development of HA.
Their main product is Home Assistant Cloud - which lets you securely access your Home Assistant from anywhere in the world over the internet. The service costs $5 per month but includes a 31 day free trial.
If you decide to sign up, you will get remote access to your HEMS and will also be supporting the development of great open source software.

To enable Home Assistant Cloud, sign up by accessing your HEMS and going to:
Configuration -> Home Assistant Cloud
Follow the instructions there and soon you should be able to access your HEMS from outside your home.

Let us know here how you get on.

Hi Peter, there is fairly well documented way of doing it for free, if we can enable add-ons to the HEMS?

Hi Oscar - Unfortunately due to the way the system works and the requirements for the PowerShaper project we can’t support Home Assistant add-ons.
If you would like to build a Home Automation system that relies on add ons like this you will need to build a system yourself, separate to the PowerShaper HEMS.
